Initial teacher education in Brazil has been marked by disputes between divergent pedagogical conceptions, under the pressure of technocratic curricular reforms. This article analyzes the foundations, challenges, and possibilities of an emancipatory and historical teacher education. This qualitative, bibliographic, and interpretive-critical study analyzes works from 2018 to 2024 and current normative guidelines, retrieved from databases such as SciELO and the CAPES Journal Portal. Results indicate that aligning curricula with the Common National Curricular Base tends to reduce the formative autonomy and critical density of teacher education programs, whereas historical-critical pedagogy and decolonial epistemologies offer alternatives oriented by cognitive justice. It concludes that critical teacher education, articulated with the recognition of plural knowledges and of the historical struggles of the profession, is a condition for a democratic, plural, and transformative education.
